“My practice is an exploration into the impossibility of defining beauty and perfection. Through personal experiences of self-doubt and worth from social comparison and media ideals, I create delicately intricate self-portraits not only highlighting my own journey but also creating a relatable platform for my audience. By partially obscuring the painting, I add objects that typically represent symbols of beauty, indicating that the feeling of our natural beauty on the outside (the aesthetic painting) is not enough – the objects essentially become a mask. Through this series of work, my aim is to help myself and others realise that it is impossible to mould yourself into the idealistic form of beauty without causing decay to your own identity. My series of wax paintings are created in response to the destruction caused to one on the inside being surrounded by this constant state of pressure. The destruction process of the painting is mimicked by the completely random pouring and splattering of the wax. By partially destroying the paintings this action highlights how one can often struggle to remove themselves from the pressures surrounding them. Through my paintings I want my audience to feel a sense of comfort within each one, but also use them as a chance to address the uncomfortable.”
