Sandra studied at Edinburgh College of Art graduating with honours, winning awards and a scholarship for further study at Masters level. She graduated with a Masters in Fine Art in 2009. Her practice has continued to be concerned with researching and observing birds; assembling a sense of them and their habits over the year. She use a layering process to build up an image that gives an essence of the bird without being a full representation. Using silhouettes simplifies the images, shifting the focus to the shapes and negative spaces. In some pieces Sandra is more concerned with the story behind the bird, while others are an artistic investigation of composition and space.
Sandra’s work takes in a variety of forms including workshops within schools, installations, artists books and painting. Sandra’s work is shortlisted for the Wildlife Artist of the Year 2015, London, and is in private collections worldwide. She also undertakes commissioned paintings of particular birds. In all this, her goal is to encourage people to look again at the natural wonder within their everyday environments.
